In the end, we made our way over to Star Orchard in Kaukauna after doing review research that showed they still had some apples and others had recent good experiences. When we pulled in, their owners were extremely transparent about how limited their crops were and what varieties remained, enabling us to salvage a little bit of our apple picking trip and give our kids a positive experience. I really wish Apple Valley Orchard would have given its customers the same courtesy. Very disappointed, and saddened by this as a repeat customer.
However, we are not at all happy with how Apple Valley has handled the situation upon our recent visit on October 1st. Their website does state that the crop is limited because of the aforementioned issues, and pick your own availability was limited (in-store varieties were supposedly more plentiful). Yet, they still ran the pick-your-own operations even though there was clearly nowhere near enough crop to support this. We came away with zero apples. What remained on the trees were either too small to be usable as eating apples or too spotted or damaged to consume (despite what they insist were perfectly edible). I'm talking substantial deformed black spots. There were dozens of people wandering the orchard looking for apples, and pretty much none of them had more than a handful (if any). Many others like us were wondering why they were bringing people out to the orchard when there were clearly no apples to be had. For those of us bringing children out for a fun experience, it was particularly disheartening to explain to them why we were leaving empty handed. As I said before, we've been coming here for years, but for those who were new to Apple Valley, we could definitely see them not coming again in future. Perhaps if they had just been more forthcoming and honest about their available picking crop up front, we would have just come out to buy from the store and not gotten our kids psyched up for a fun family activity. As it stood, we were not about to purchase anything from the store because we felt like our time was wasted, and we have reservations about coming back for that very reason. It's really a shame that the crop suffered the way it did, but we felt even more badly about how poorly this situation was handled by the owners given the circumstances.
Decent Apple picking experience. We go here, for the small petting zoo experience in the back. They offer food for the animals, for $1/cup. Don't let the goats eat it all, save some for the miniature horses in the back!
Haven't visited yet but know the owners we're kinda far off neighbors in the north FIRST class people
Our family has been visiting Apple Valley Orchard for a few years now. We go every fall for apple picking. This is a great place for families - there are a wide variety of apple species to choose from, parking is ample and well-directed by staff, and trams take pickers in and out of the orchard. There are play facilities and a very large petting zoo facility on site as well. There is a large, well-stocked store with items like caramel apples, maple syrups and so forth. All these things are why we have come back year after year. (A side note: This location has somewhat limited hours and they DO NOT accept credit or debit cards - cash or check only. Bear in mind when heading out there.)
Family favorite. Great apples and fun tractor trailer rides. Kids enjoy the small play area.
Beautiful location and lots of fun for the kids (wagon rides, petting zoo, pumpkin patch in addition to the apple picking)
All that being said, 2017 was an exception. Firstly, it should be noted that this season has been exceptionally hard on orchards all over Northeast Wisconsin. We've had an extremely wet season, there have been hail events and early freezes have taken an abnormal toll on apple crops all over the area. Many apples region-wide have been small, sparse and dinged and damaged. It's a rather unfortunate event that is not at all exclusive to Apple Valley.
